School Based Traineeship Program
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the School Based Traineeship Program?
The Public Sector School Based Traineeship Program will provide you with an opportunity to undertake a School Based Traineeship in a WA State Government agency, while completing Years 11 and 12. This means you work part-time to complete a qualification while going to school.
Undertaking a School Based Traineeship will give you hands on experience while being paid a training wage.
You will also complete your Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
Am I eligible?
You are eligible if you:
- Are a WA Government School student commencing Year 11 study in 2010 in the Perth metropolitan area
- Have a genuine interest in completing a Certificate II in Business or Information Techology
- Are an enthusiastic, reliable and dedicated student who will be committed to maintaining your schooling as well as the SBT requirements
You must be deemed academically capable of undertaking a Traineeship by your school - so check with your school VET Coordinator.
You must also be an Australian citizen or permanent resident who is currently living in Western Australia.
How do I apply?
You must apply for the School Based Traineeship Program through your School VET Coordinator. They will have all the details!
How am I selected?
Once you have submitted your application, you will be invited to attend a preliminary interview - this is to assess your suitability to participate in the Program. The interviewers will be looking for students that have the right attitude, are interested in Business or Information Technology, enthusiastic, motivated and keen to learn new skills.
If you are successful in the preliminary interview your resume will then be sent to WA State Government agencies that want to employ a School Based Trainee. They may then invite you to attend an interview. They will use this interview to select who they wish to employ.
If I am successful, when do I start?
If you are selected by a State Government agency to undertake a School Based Traineeship, you will commence the Program in February 2010. You will complete an 8 week unpaid Workplace Learning trial. This is to make sure that you like the placement and the type of work and so the agency can deem you suitable to undertake a School Based Traineeship.
If the agency deems you suitable at the end of the trial, you will commence your School Based Traineeship in April - and begin to be paid!
What will I learn?
If you are successful in gaining a School Based Traineeship you will have the chance to complete your first qualification - a Certificate II in Business or Information Technology.
By the time you've finished your School Based Traineeship you will know how to:
- Perform reception and administration duties
- Process mail
- Deliver excellent customer service
- Use a range of software and technology
- Use a range of office equipment
- and much more...
How many hours would I work?
Completing a School Based Traineeship means you attend work 2 days per week and school 3 days per week. This means you will work 15 hours per week and your school Vocational, Education and Training (VET) Coordinator will decide the days you will work.
Do I have to work in School Holidays?
Yes. You should be prepared to work through school holidays (unless annual leave is negotiated with your employer), as you are classified as a part time employee.
How much will I be paid?
As a School Based Trainee you will be paid a training wage of $96.75 per week in Year 11 and $112.50 per week in Year 12.
