School-Based TraineesSchool Based Traineeship Program

A Bright Future for the WA Public Sector

What is the School Based Traineeship Program?

If you're currently in Year 10 this year and going into Year 11 next year, attend a WA Government School and looking for an opportunity to kick-start your career during Years 11 and 12, then check out the School Based Traineeship Program!

The School Based Traineeship Program is a fantastic way for you to gain valuable work and life experiences, earn money and a formal qualification, all while completing your high school education.

The Public Sector Commission coordinates the School Based Traineeship Program, in partnership with Swan Education Industry Training Association (SEITA).

In short, the Public Sector Commission coordinates the School Based Traineeship placements and provides support and advice to participating WA State Government agencies, while SEITA coordinate School Based Trainees in the workplace (visiting, monitoring and completing assessments).

How does it work?

Once you have applied for the School Based Traineeship Program, shortly after you will be invited to attend an interview. This interview is to assess your suitability to undertake a School Based Traineeship. If you are deemed suitable, you will have the chance to be referred to WA State Government agencies that want to employ a School Based Trainee. This means your resume will be sent to WA State Government agencies for their consideration.

If you are the successful candidate, you will commence your School Based Traineeship in February the following year (in Year 11), work 2 days and attend school for 3 days per week. The Program is for 2 years, so at the end of Year 12 you will receive a nationally recognised qualification - and to top it all off - you get paid!

Upon successful completion, you could receive one of the following qualifications:

  • Certificate II in Business
  • Certificate II in Information Technology

A great start in life!

A School Based Traineeship will provide you with an opportunity to begin preparing yourself for a career in the workforce, as well as work towards your Western Australian Certificate of Education and a Certificate II in Business or Information Technology - a nationally recognised qualification.
